Background
Growth Networks (GRONET) was formed in December 2015, It's a non-governmental Organization under a registration certificate number S.5914/13812 with the head office located at Ndikutamadda Masajja-B Busaabala-Road Makindye Ssaabagabo Wakiso District. The idea of forming Growth Networks (GRONET) was conceived by the president of this company due to the persistent state of poverty, social injustice and inadquate social services. He sold it to committed and dedicated fellow Ugandans who felt the need for such a local initiative that will contribute and play a major role in transforming the lives of the communities.
Transforming a nation into a viable entity requires collective efforts and responsibilities in alignment with the Government’s policy for “fundamental change” through poverty eradication initiatives. This initiative was undertaken after sharing a felt concern with local community leadership and community members at different national foras about the need to become innovative, think outside the box and have a joint effort to pull the suffering rural population out of the prevailing deplorable socio-economic situations. The different foras revealed that the prevailing unfavorable situation is being perpetuated by inadequate income due to:- Poor land yields and management practices.
- Deteriorating environmental conditions resulting from unsustainable utilization/exploitation of national resources.
- Shortage of institutional credit in rural areas that are geared towards development of the citizens at grass-root levels.
- Low literacy level despite the presence of Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) in the country.
- HIV/AIDS, inadequate health facilities, poor delivery of social services.
- Lack of jobs/employment due to deficiency of innovative leadership and entrepreneurial skills.
- Lack of entrepreneurial skills, trainings and exposure, health and hygiene.
It’s against the above background that corrective actions among the marginalized rural/urban poor, dwindling economic activities, food insecurity and lack of community involvement and meaningful participation in the development process that saw the formation of
GRONET as a community centered initiative to fight rural/urban poverty, contribute to the improvement of health, social services, offer support in capacity building of local communities at different levels and thus emancipate the rural/urban marginalized poor
through a gradual process of positive change that will vehemently result into the sustainable socio economic development of the whole nation. It's noted that local communities have unknowingly played a self-inflicting role of perpetuating the vicious cycle of poverty
by continuously harboring a detrimental attitude of accepting poverty as part of their normal life.
This mentality is common among the poor rural/urban communities all over Uganda who have unreservedly resigned themselves to the poverty syndrome and poor health.
Therefore involving them in the development process is of paramount importance in re-building their confidence and strengthening their capacities for collective positive actions. This process of enlightenment and empowerment is to be achieved through participatory
grass-roots project identification, conceptualization, plannings, implementations, monitoring and evaluation and networking with key stakeholder in development as a strategy to alleviate mass poverty, improve health service delivery, conserve the environment,
food security, human rights, good governance, ignorance and ensuring sustainable development.
